I was never fan of custom roms even if I am foss advocate. I always believed that mobile hardware is a so closed ecosystem that a community maintained mobile operating system, is a dead end.
Alas… I was so wrong! After waiting, and waiting …. and waiting the official upgrade to the latest version of Android from the manufacturer (HTC) for my smartphone I decided that I waited enough (see here: HTC… no upgrade…. oh wait….
Also, after creating iQunix OS I learned that a vanilla (unmodified) operating system will always be lighter, faster and easier to maintain.
That is why I preferred to wipe my phone and install Android 2.3.4 (oxygen) and not wait for HTC to send OTA Upgrade …
Oxygen community uses the latest Android version from Google’s code tree and they port it unmodified to HTC Desire… and only to this devices… so naturally they know their job. Oxygen ROM gives you the same user experience that Google’s Nexus series smartphones gives you. It is actualy the same vanilla Android.
Last but not least, I decided to write a steb-by-step article for anybody who wants to safely do the same. You can read it here (Greek): https://utappia.org/2011/06/pos-kanoume-egkatastasi-android-2-3-4-se-htc-desire.html . Yου can use Google Translate if you want to read it in your native language.
