MPEG H.265 codec cuts in half the bandwidth

The Moving Picture Experts Group (also known as MPEG) has met to issue a draft international standard of a new video-compression format, MPEG H.265 codec that will enable compression levels roughly twice as high as the current H.264/AVC standard. There’s a lot of industry interest in this, because this codec will exploit mobile networks, such as smartphones and tablets, as long as they could download the same video in half time — without quality loss. In addition,  Per Fröjd said that this High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) may be the solution for the network traffic problem.

MPEG standardized the digital audio encoding formats MP3 and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), which is the music format used by Apple in their consumer offerings. Also, MPEG has a big impact on the industry and on consumer electronics.
