Linux STEAM beta available next week!

Great news from Valve’s Linux blog, since these guys are not joking around. Seriously, there are going to release the “most wanted” Steam beta in Linux. The version will be only available in Ubuntu 12.04. Notice that it will be closed beta, not public, meaning that Valve is going to send Steam beta only to their internal friends in order to have some first numbers, scores and benchmarks. Hardware wise, there will be plenty of hardware to be used and tested under Steam.

During Okteberfest there will be another release for external beta, up to 1000 users. One of the reasons for an external beta is being able to test Steam for Linux on as many different hardware configurations as possible. Also there will be using a sign up page for the external beta. Information about the sign up will be announced in a future post.

The final stable relase is meant for Feb 2013 though. Keep in touch 😉

Here is the announcement from Valve’s Blog:

Things have been going well. We will be having an internal beta starting next week, and a private external beta for 1,000 users sometime in October.

The private external beta will include:

Steam
One Valve game
Support for Ubuntu 12.04 and above

It will not yet include:

Big Picture mode
Additional Valve games

For existing Linux users, the external private beta is a good release for seeing where we are in running our games on Linux. We will be using a sign up page for the external beta. Information about the sign up will be announced in a future post.

For those new to Linux, we recommend waiting for a subsequent release where more features are implemented along with improvements to the user install experience.

  1. I hope that they pick me for the beta. But I’ll be happy either way. Because Steam is finally coming to Ubuntu/Linux.
