uCareSystem has had the ability to detect packages that were uninstalled and then remove their config files. Now it uses a better way that detects more. Also with this release, there are fixes and enhancements that make it even more useful.
First of all, Its the Olympics… you saw the app icon that was change and also and I had to show some cool ASCII….
As for the changes here is a summary:
Fix: Duplicate entries for packages that ask for restart issue #72
This one was a bit of surprise, as one day wile I was updating my system with uCareSystem 24.07.x it prompted me that I should restart because some packages have requested it. While I scrolled to see which packages, I saw:

libssl3 was displayed 2 times ! and … I was like :
Why the f… you show 2 or more times the packages ?
With the new 24.09.05 release this is not an issue any more….
Fix: Warning: The unit file, source configuration file or drop-ins of apt-news.service changed on disk. Run ‘systemctl daemon-reload’ to reload units. issue #71
This one is an Ubuntu specific issue that was just a visual warning (in bright yellow!) when the “apt update” was invoked by uCareSystem… But my OCD kicked in. I had to get rid of it without removing it as some Ubuntu servers use it….
Enhancement: Show the list of potential upgrades and the versions of packages that will be upgraded
As geeks, we love to see in an informative way what is going to be upgraded. We also like to know from what version to which. So with the release of 24.09.05, you can see the beautiful numbers on your screen 🙂
Ubuntu users should bear in mind that updates are released in a phased manner. Even if you see some packages that are available for upgrade. There is a chance that they will not be upgraded just yet.
You can read more in the official documentation: About apt upgrade and phased updates
Enhancement: Deinstalled Packages issue #1
Yeah… you read right…. the first and oldest issue that was reported, was resolved after almost 7 years…. and I am like:
Yes yes… I know… I just had the “deborphan” do the work for years and I didn’t want to remove it… but its time to reduce external dependencies as much as possible….
With the uCareSystem 24.09.05 you should see that it detects more unused, old, garbage configs that are meant to be removed.
